Golf Success at BBC Sports Awards

Welsh golf is recognised twice at the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2011 awards.

Fresh from his efforts as part of Great Britain and Ireland’s winning Walker Cup team, Rhys Pugh received the Carwyn James Award for emerging young talent, while Gareth Hughes picked up the Unsung Hero Award for his work with the Rhondda Golf Academy. Based at Rhondda Golf Club, the Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund supported Academy works to promote the game with young people.

Commenting on the awards, Golf Union of Wales Chairman John Jermine said: ‘It is the first time Welsh golf has achieved such a double success and shows the work being put in across Wales to develop elite players and also grow the grass roots of the game, trying to build on the success of the Ryder Cup being held in Wales.

‘Both Rhys and Gareth are very deserving in their different ways. Rhys has shown himself as one of the best emerging talents in British golf. The calm way he went about his Walker Cup debut, winning all three of his matches against highly rated Americans, was an inspiration to us all.’
