Gastro Golf – South-West Wales (3/4 days)

Fairyhill ItineraryWe’re in sea-washed Wales where seafood doesn’t get much better. Start off at Newport Links Golf Club on Pembrokeshire’s rugged north coast. It’s a gem of a course with wonderful views across Newport Bay. In Newport itself, Llys Meddyg is a fashionable boutique bolthole with great food (you must try the scallops). The funky, foodie ambience is quite similar at the award-winning Grove at Narberth in south Pembrokeshire. Stay here before or after playing at Tenby Golf Club, reputedly the oldest club in Wales and certainly one of our finest links courses. Then it’s off to the Gower Peninsula and Pennard Golf Club, the remarkable ‘links in the sky’ overlooking beautiful Three Cliffs Bay. Stay at Fairyhill, an intimate country house hotel with outstanding food that proudly proclaims its local provenance.

Gastro Golf - Mid Wales (3/4 days)

Tyddyn Llan IntineraryGolf in the green heartlands of Wales involves succulent tastes from local farm-fresh produce like world-class Welsh mountain lamb. First stop has to be Bala on the gateway to Snowdonia. Spectacular mountain views are guaranteed at Bala Golf Club’s 10-hole hilltop course, 1,000ft above sea level. Post-golf, foodies are in for a special treat at Tyddyn Llan, Llandrillo, where top Michelin-starred chef Bryan Webb can’t stop winning awards. Day two may well be the ultimate golf-and-gastro combo – play at Harlech’s famous Royal St David’s championship links, and eat (and stay) at Castle Cottage where Glyn Roberts cooks heavenly food. Then head south to Cradoc Golf Club, a superb, sweeping parkland course with views of the Brecon Beacons, and stay at Felin Fach Griffin, one of Wales’s leading gastropubs.

Gastro Golf - North Wales (3/4 days)

Gastro ItineraryCombine great food and great golf on this trip. Start off at the friendly Caernarfon Golf Club with its stunning mountain and sea views, then sample Rob John’s equally stunning cuisine at nearby Rhiwafallen restaurant with rooms. Next stop is the Llŷn Peninsula, so it has to be Nefyn, the breathtaking headland course that’s literally out on a limb. Another place you won’t want to miss is Plas Bodegroes, Pwllheli, a small, arty Georgian hotel with a legendary restaurant. Chef Chris Chown was one of the first in Wales to kick off the culinary revolution, and he’s still leading the way. Then it’s over the Menai Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey and the flat but challenging links course at the Anglesey Golf Club, Rhosneigr. Stay at Ye Olde Bull’s Head, Beaumaris, where the food (to paraphrase Michael Winner) is as historic as the surroundings. Seafood in the stylish Loft restaurant is a must.

Go Gower (3 days)

Langland Itinerary Golf on the Gower Peninsula just west of Swansea comes with specacular sea views. Play Pennard, the ‘links in the sky’ perched on a clifftop. The little resort of Langland Bay is one of the prettiest on Gower. The same can be said for its golf club, another south-facing clifftop course with far-reaching views across the Bristol Channel in one direction and the Brecon Beacons in the other. For more of a flavour of the north of the peninsula head for the Gower Gower Golf Club, a parkland-style course set in rolling countryside.

Based at Swansea – Play: Gower, Langland and Pennard. For further details, see Golf on Gower.

Bordering on Brilliant (3 days)

Old_padeswood_itinerary You don’t have to travel far from the Midlands or North West for for some golfing gold, Welsh-style. Northop Country Park, just 12 miles from Chester, is a relative newcomer (founded in 1993), yet its stunning championship course offers classic parkland golf. There’s more of the same at the lush, undulating Rhuddlan Golf Club in the Vale of Clwyd, an excellent test of golf regularly used for County and National Championship Events. Up for a challenge? Then head for Old Padeswood Golf Club in Flintshire’s picturesque Alyn Valley – yet another undulating parkland course which has what’s reputed to be one of the most difficult opening holes in North Wales.

Based at Northop Golf and Country Club – Play: Old Padeswood, Northop and Rhuddlan

High and Mighty Golf (3 days)

Llanymynech itineraryIan Woosnam likes it here. He's biased, mind you, for he learned to play at lofty, cliff-backed Llanymynech, where the view fom the 12th is one of the most magnificent you'll see anywhere. Other high and mighty courses in this untouched borderland region include Llandrindod Wells. Harry Vardon built this involving course, so you'll have to take time off to appreciate the stunning scenery. Just up the road - and the figurative word is up - is mountainous Welshpool, rated to be the hardest on the legs, but well worth it. Its perched on the roof of the world on Golfa Hill (a strange coincidence - nothing to do with golf as far as we can make out).

Based in Welshpool - Play: Llanymynech, Llandrindod Wells and Welshpool

Pars and Spas (3 or 4 days)

Spa itinerary Great golf + gorgeous spas = the perfect pairing. Play some of the best courses in the world (including the famed Ryder Cup Twenty Ten) and then luxuriate in spas that are also world-class. It’s such an irresistible prospect that men, as well as women, have been known to take the plunge. Book into The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, for the ultimate combo of pars and spas. Other clubs that take their rest and relaxation as seriously as their greens and fairways include the Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan, the Marriott St Pierre at Chepstow, Bryn Meadows in the South Wales Valleys and the Nicklaus-influenced Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club at Llanelli. It’s also easy to mix-and-match – stay at swish hotels like St Brides Spa, Saundersfoot and play courses in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

Don’t use just one base for this one Soak up a spa every day (they’re all close together): Celtic Manor, The Vale, Marriott St Pierre, Bryn Meadows, Machynys and St Brides Hotel (with golf at Tenby)
